Decarbonizing the steel industry

The Moon is an extreme environment, where sustainability and zero emissions are not an option but a necessity. Out of these necessities, Helios discovered and developed a novel method to produce iron from iron ore, requiring only thermal energy, and emitting only oxygen.

Current methods of steel production emit large quantities of CO2 through the reduction of iron ore with carbon. For every ton of steel, approximately 2 tons of CO2 are emitted, making the industry responsible for 8% of humanity’s carbon footprint.
Unlike other green steel technologies, HELIOS does not require steelmakers to dramatically alter their existing processes. Instead, the module is directly integrated into Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI) furnaces, which reduces cost and facilitates faster adoption.
